When Matt and I first discussed having a combination office/nursery for our baby he had trouble envisioning how everything would fit and how the space would work. I tried drawing my ideas out for him but he still had a bit of trouble seeing my vision. There were times when I wasn’t sure that it would all come together either but I am happy to say in the end it worked out fabulously.

This is the view as you enter the room. The Nursery takes up most of the room with a small office space to the right.

And the view looking back at the door. We opted for the space (and wallet) friendly IKEA Poang rocker instead of a glider. We repurposed a small rustic side table to hold some nursing supplies. The canvas in this space was a zero dollar DIY. We had the canvas from a project we had intentions of doing years ago. I used my silhouette machine to cut out a robot shape from vinyl and used acrylic paints that I had on hand from wedding crafts. I painted around the robot and when it was all done peeled off the vinyl to reveal the robot negative.

If the crib looks small that is because it is! We decided on the Bloom Alma Mini Crib because it is on wheels and fits through doors. This allows us to put baby in our bedroom for the first few months but also to put him/her to sleep in the office/nursery if we like. This size crib is much more common in Europe, having huge cribs is kinda an american thing. We hope baby will be comfortable until 18 months or so in this set up.

Next to the crib is our diaper changing station. We purchased a restaurant utility cart that would fit the ever popular Coshee Changer. The changing pad is a soft foam that can easily be wiped clean. The cart is fastened to the wall with safety straps and is really sturdy. I really wanted open storage that would allow easy access to cloth diaper and clothing supplies. We achieved this with locker styled bins. We were able to make good use of the metal lockers with these magnetic storage bins. The large bin holds our cloth diaper wipes/ diaper cream/ and diaper wipe spray bottle and the smaller bins hold various personal grooming/health related items. The Ikea shelf above the changing station keeps extra blankets and extra diaper supplies within reach.

The lockers are perhaps one of my favorite parts of the nursery. I added clothing rods (dowels in adhesive brackets) to transform the lockers into a closet. I smile every time I see the tiny baby clothes hanging up!

I also used the Silhouette machine to craft some clothing size tags to help keep the clothes organized. The locker shelves are perfect for storing our various baby carriers and miscellaneous items. The two red bins on the top store crib sheets and extra swaddles.

Below the window in this room is a small read and play area for baby. We already have so many books for baby! The book sling keeps many books handy and eventually accessible to baby. The red canvas cube holds a majority of the books.

So far all of baby’s toys fit in the red tub but I am sure this won’t always be the case. I added the TOYS label using my Silhouette machine and some white vinyl. The O is a gear shape. I also used the vinyl to create a robot stencil for the white locker bins. I used the same robot and same blue acrylic paint from the canvas project. I love this little guy an his crooked smile! The locker bin labels were also made on the silhouette.

A little white vinyl turns this bin into a laundry hamper and I can’t get enough of the felt ball and robot mobile that I created.

The office side of the room uses the same color pallet- Grey, Aqua, and Red. The red locker keeps most of our office supplies out of sight. Also, we freed up a lot of desk space by housing the printer and Silhouette Machine in the closet. I have to say I really enjoy having the closet serve as craft central and it’s aqua walls make me smile. I also am really liking the back of the door wrapping paper station.

Two last details. The “Best Year Ever” calendar makes me grin and I am so exited to use this handmade diaper tote gifted to me by my friend Amy. The robot lining makes me smile and the red chevrons match the throw pillows that I had made for the nursery.

I am not the only one enjoying the nursery. Both cats are in LOVE with the rocking chair and rolling around on the robot rug. Hugo also likes to lay in the changing pad but I am trying to break him of that habit.

The weekend that I was put on bed rest was also the weekend that Hugo turned 1. Our little guy is officially no longer a kitten and now a cat! I weighed him this week and he is 20 lbs. Holy cow! Look at the little kitten we brought home last July compared to him now!

This past weekend my midwives relaxed my bed rest a bit. Meaning I could get out of bed and take some photos of our big boy. Nap time is decidedly not his favorite time for paparazzi. Oh well, deal with it birthday boy!

I mentioned that he is 20 lbs. Here are some more fun facts about our big kitty.

He loves fleece and furry blankets. He shoves his nose into the blanket and inhales very deeply. Then he starts purring and kneading the blanket. If the fur is somewhat long he also likes to bite the fur.

He loves to chase Cheese. They are finally getting along better. He is better able to control his impulses to jump on her every time he sees her and she doesn’t hiss at him constantly. She has started to play with him too- dive bombing him from on top the bed and giving him a chase every now and again. He is still obsessed with biting her fur though- I think it is related to his blanket fetish.

Even though he and Cheese are getting along better he won’t cuddle with us if she is also doing so. He prefers to have 1:1 time with Matt especially At night Matt will sometimes go lay downstairs on the couch with Hugo. This goes back to his kitten days when we didn’t let him sleep in our room yet and Matt would hang out with him until he fell asleep.

Hugo loves the bathroom. He loves to eat toilet paper so he isn’t allowed in the bathrooms unsupervised. But if one of us is in the bathroom he HAS to be in there too. He lays at your feet while you are on the toilet and sometimes jumps up on your lap (awkward!). He lies on the bath mat while you shower and recently loves to go lay in a dry shower or bathtub. He also likes to hide behind the shower curtain and attack you from behind it.

While he has a personality of his own he does have a lot of similar personality traits as our dear departed Cassanova. So much so that both Matt and I sometimes slip up and call his Cass. I can’t believe we lucked out and got such an awesome cat after losing Cass.

Happy Birthday Hugo! We are so happy that you are part of our family. Hoping the next new addition to the family doesn’t stress you out too much!

This post is cross posted from Parker Haus Grows

Yeah, so today is day 4 of strict bedrest for Blobby and I.

As relaxing as that term sounds I can assure you it is hard mentally and physically. I am trying to take it day by day. How did I end up here? After all I was having a perfectly boring pregnancy right?

I have been having lots of Braxton Hicks contractions for a couple months. There wasn’t a pattern so no cause for concern. BH contractions are normal. My midwife put me on Calcium Magnesium Citrate and that was it. Fast forward to last Thursday. I notice that my BH contractions are happening pretty frequently. For me BH contractions are mostly painless and when they happen my whole belly gets rock hard. Frequently a bulge will appear on my belly as it hardens and tightens. When Matt got home I thought we should time the contractions to see if there was a pattern. 5 minutes apart and 1 minute in duration. Uhhh-Oh. Even though they were painless i figured we should call the midwives to see what i should do.

The first thing a midwife or Dr will suggest in this situation is to lie down for a bit and to drink 2 large glasses of water. I had already done these things before calling the midwife. The first thing she did is ask me a bunch of questions to see if I had other preterm labor signs. “Did my back hurt? Did I have cramping? Had I had an bloody discharge? Did I have any fluid leaking? Etc. Then she reassured me that these type of contractions usually don’t dilate the cervix, but they can prepare the cervix by shortening, softening, and moving it forward. She also noted that not yet 36 weeks was too early for these preparations to happen and we should try to get the contractions to reduce in frequency or to stop completely.

She had me drink another glass of my Cal Mag Citrate followed by a glass of wine and a relaxing bath. She told me to get my butt in bed after that and let Matt handle dinner. She said to stay resting for the next 24 hours and see how things went. The contractions slowed to every 10 minutes after following her instructions. The next day I rested in bed and the contractions continued but much less intense and more sporadic. This made me feel better. Until I realized that I was getting a menstrual cramp feeling with the contractions. Late Friday night I started to feel a tugging sensation on my cervix. I spent most of the night worried that changes were indeed happening to my cervix as the midwife and I had discussed.

Saturday AM I paged the midwife on call. She came to our house to check me out. It was so nice to not have to get out of bed and so reassuring to see her. She checked Blobby’s vitals. He/She was responsive and doing well. She did a pelvic exam and confirmed that my intuition was correct. I wasn’t dilated but my cervix had moved forward, softened, and shortened. These things don’t necessarily mean that I am going to go into labor right away, but the are concerning. This wasn’t something we wanted to happen at 36 weeks.

She added Cramp Bark tincture to my regime. She noted that Blobby was head down and low. Sitting or standing immediately was bringing on contractions and she noted that I should try to stay as horizontal as possible. Even though bed rest isn’t statistically proven to prevent preterm labor it would be best to avoid direct pressure of Blobby’s head on my cervix. Pressure alone could start the dilation process. This is when it hit me. Bedrest.

Even though OBs and hospitals will say it is ok to deliver at 36 weeks babies born before 37 weeks have a higher chance of respiratory problems that might require a stay in the nursery. They also have more feeding problems and are less likely to be able to breastfeed immediately. After 37 weeks the incidence of these problems decreases. For this reason my midwives would like me to make it to at least 37 weeks. If we make it to 37 our next goal is 38 and after that 39. The longer Blobby can bake the better. My midwife also mentioned that sometimes babies who show preterm labor signs end up going to the due date or longer. I laughed because I was already preparing myself for that ironic situation.

So, bedrest… what is it like?
Physical: For 23 hours a day I am laying down in bed- usually on my left or right sides with a whole slew of pillows around me in an attempt to make myself comfortable. My hips are very sore as a result. If I could tolerate laying on my back I think my hips would be much happier- but this late in pregnancy laying on my back is out.

Because laying down so much can cause blood clots I am rocking some sexy compression socks and trying to remember to do muscle contractions in my legs to keep the blood moving. I am working hard to stay hydrated which means frequent bathroom visits- thankfully the bathroom is just a few paces away from the bed. When I move myself to sitting or standing I have a big contraction. Fun times.

Cheese is taking advantage of my constant reclined position. She likes to sit on top of my ribs and hip and get lots of pets. Hugo has been keeping watch over me. It is really sweet.

I try to limit the number of naps that I take during the day so that I am not wide awake and thus keeping Matt up a night. In order to limit the number of times I get up Matt has made sure I have much of what I need at my bedside.

My Cantigo mug filled with ice plus an extra one for when the ice melts

3-4 soda stream bottles filled with filtered water

Recharge drink

glass of Cal Mag Citrate

Cramp Bark and a small glass of water

snacks like oranges, apples, crackers, and yogurt

Cell phone with charger

iPad

Nintendo DS and games for entertainment

sticky notes and pen

My Mom came over on her lunch break and heated up my lunch for me, saving me a trip downstairs and providing me with much needed company and conversation. Best Mom ever! My SIL has been texting me to check in on me/keep my spirits up and various friends have also been reaching out. It is all appreciated. There is so much I want to say about the mental and emotional side of bedrest but I think it will be a post of its own.

So that is where we are, Blobby and I. I am laying on my side in bed while blobby kicks me and stretches. He/She is still on the inside and I am trying to keep it that way. Bedrest is hard but we are taking it one day at a time.

Have you been on bedrest? Care to share any bedrest boredom busters?

How Far Along:

 35 weeks!

Size of baby: Baby is the size of a coconut- well, to be specific baby is as heavy as a coconut- almost 6 lbs.

source

Random & Interesting Developmental Stuff: Baby’s hearing is fully developed and baby is fattening up.

Total Weight Gain: 34 lbs

Sleep: After enjoying great sleep all pregnancy I’ve started to experience more difficulty sleeping. In addition to my pregnancy pillow I am now stuffing 3 additional pillows around me in an effort to find comfort. I am flipping sides numerous times during the night and it is comical- like making a barge turn.

Symptoms: Add reflux to the list. I also was having a lot of swelling in my feet and ankles. My husband so loving pointed out that my feet looked like bread dough that was rising. I was down to only being able to fit my feet in my Ugg slippers and flip-flops. After a meeting with my midwife she decided that it was best if I work from home the rest of my pregnancy. Thankfully work agreed. She prescribed foot elevation with breaks every 20 minutes, sitting on my birth ball for stretches during the day, walking in the pool, compression socks, and lots of water. After a week of working from home and following her prescription I am happy to say that I can see that bones in my ankle again! So much more comfortable!

Cravings: None really, maybe sweets- I have a stronger sweet tooth as pregnancy goes on.

Movement: HOLY wiggly baby! I don’t know if Blobby all of a sudden “woke up” or my placenta thinned out more but the past 5 weeks have been an explosion of movement. Blobby has flipped which side he/she is laying on a couple of times. At one appointment he/she was laying head down face up (sunny side up) and punching me with a hand on the left side and a hand on the right side. Little bugger. I also finally saw my first foot move across my belly- cool and weird all at the same time.

Maternity Clothes: I actually have been able to wear a few pre-pregnancy maxi dresses as of late.

Milestones: I felt my first hiccups a couple of weeks ago and now feel them pretty frequently. It is the strangest sensation!

What I’m looking forward to: Looking forward to meeting this little person. I would remiss if I didn’t say that I am looking forward to sleeping on my back again and having a nice cold beer all to myself (not just sips off Matt’s beer). There *might* be a growing bomber collection in the fridge that Matt has been building for me with lots of sour beers and other specialty beers that he has been enjoying without me.

The belly: It is still relatively high. Sitting is sometimes tricky as it feels like I am smooshing my belly. Blobby doesn’t tolerate it if my legs press against my belly and if I lean forward in a chair he/she instantly kicks me to let me know that he/she isn’t pleased. If you look at me from the side (photos below) I look huge, but the belly is still really narrow- I’m just carrying this kiddo all out in front!

Sometime in the next 3-7 weeks baby should be making an appearance. EEEE! So excited!

If you have kids, what did you do the last 5 weeks of pregnancy? Any suggestions or words of wisdom?

This post is cross-posted from Parker Haus Grows.

When I began to look at mobiles for our nursery I was pretty discouraged with how expensive modern mobile options were. This modern felt ball mobile was listed for $80 and I couldn’t help but think that I could make my own for less. I was right, my supplies came to approximately $30. (less if you can purchase the individual felt balls- I had to purchase in bulk to get the colors/sizes that I wanted). When I finally took the time to sit down and put the mobile together it was surprisingly easy.

Supplies:

(8-10) 1 cm felt balls in desired colors- I did 2 each of red, aqua, green, and grey

(8-10) 1.5 cm felt balls in desired colors- I did 2 each of red, aqua, green, and grey

(8-10) 2 cm felt balls in desired colors- I did 2 each of red, aqua, green, and grey

(8-10) 3 cm felt balls in desired colors- I did 2 each of red, aqua, green, and grey

Small beads either in clear or colors that match your felt balls

Clear thread

Needle

Scissors

Wee Gallery Mobile frame

Optional- photos or card stock shapes to hang from center clips.

Before I started I removed the hanging clips from the frames (except for two clips in the center) using small pliers.

Thread a length of thread through the needle and tied the ends together making a double strand. Thread the needle through a bead and secure it by passing the needle through the end of the double thread and then pass it through the bead from bottom to top

Thread a 3 cm ball

Then thread another bead on the needle and passed the needle through the bead again from bottom to top (creating a loop around the bead)

Thread a 2 cm ball

Repeat the process with a 1.5 cm ball and a 1 cm ball

Arrange the beads and balls on the strand as depicted below

Attach the strand to the wire frame with a square knot

Repeat for each loop on the frame

I am quite pleased with the result! Hopefully Blobby is as captivated with the mobile as his/her mommy is!

Some random cell phone photos of what we’ve been up to.

At around 33 weeks my ankle and foot swelling got to the point where my midwife said I needed to work from home so I could try to keep the swelling at bay. As my loving husband pointed out my feet looked like bread dough that had risen. *sigh* Thankfully my employer was agreeable and I started working from home last friday. So far it has had a dramatic effect on my swelling so I am very encouraged that we can keep it under control with elevation of my feet, frequent breaks (every 20 minutes), compression socks, and walks in the pool.

Matt and I have taken some classes in preparation for Blobby’s arrival. Above is the baby Matt selected for us (because it was sleeping!) at “Day about baby” which was a day long Saturday class about the basics after birth. We found out that Matt is much better at swaddling than I am. We also are wrapping up a 7 week series on natural childbirth called Birth Zone . This course was recommended to us by not only our midwives but also every doula candidate that we interviewed. I cannot recommend this series enough- if you are in the Seattle area and trying for natural childbirth either in or out of the hospital it is a great class. We also took infant CPR and have breastfeeding and Happiest Baby on the Block class coming up in May. I must say, it is a lot easier for me to schedule a class than to read a book these days.

The birth bags are packed, the nursery is ready, and the car seat is installed! Last weekend Matt and I installed the car seat and then he took it to be checked out at the hospital car seat clinic. We only had one thing done incorrectly and the car seat checkers raved about our choice of seat. On the recommendation of a well-respected mommy friend we purchased the Diono RXT convertible car seat. For a lot of reasons (many unique to our situation and vehicle) we decided to forego the infant car seat. Our Honda Element is one of the few cars that can easily accommodate this seat in the rear facing position. It was meant to be! I have to say though, it is a little funny to be driving around with an empty car seat.

More robots! I broke out the silhouette this weekend and made a robot stencil using vinyl. A little aqua acrylic paint and the white locker bins got some decoration! While I was being crafty I made some labels for the bins too. Look at me being productive.

Well that was a pretty baby heavy thursday thoughts post! But hey, baby may arrive anywhere from 4-8 weeks from now so we do have baby on the brain as you might imagine.

Spring has arrived! Here in Seattle we have enjoyed a few beautiful days sprinkled throughout the normal gray and rain. This time of year I really love the huge window that we have in our bedroom when the flowering plum trees are in bloom!

Easter day was especially beautiful. Matt and I enjoyed brunch with my Mom and spent the weekend unpacking out kitchen. Yep you read that right we finally are wrapped up with our renovation! One of these days I’ll get around to taking some proper photos but for now here are some snapped with my cell phone.

While we were going through the reno it may have seemed like the kitchen was very brown/grey/white- but as you can see we have lots of colorful kitchen accessories which is why we went for a more natural palate.

My Mommy friends (and SIL) like to remind me that we are going to have to figure out something to keep little hands off the kitchen island. We know, but for now we are enjoying its beauty.

We did a little purging of kitchen utensils. We are so in love with our Joseph Joseph cutting boards that Matt bought me a larger set (and then forgot to give them to me for Christmas- whoops).

We decided to continue to use the metal strips and magnetic spice containers from our first kitchen organization attempt. In the renovation the space that was formally our baking cabinet became the beautiful open storage that you see on the right. This meant that we had to make room for baking supplies in the corner cabinet and do a little purging.

A number of people have asked what the horizontal glass and aluminum cabinets were on either side of the sink. I am in love with our tip-up cabinets which now store our Fiesta ware (pictured above) and our every day drinking glasses. We use the regular cabinets above to store lesser used items- and it’s a good thing- I need a step stool to reach the upper cabinets!

I can say with confidence that the best decision that we made was to purchase a single basin sink (pictured above during the construction phase) that is smaller than the “standard” double kitchen sink (28 inches wide vs 33 inches)- yet feels so much larger. First, it is modern and sexy- yes sexy. Second, you can fit your big pots and pans easily in it for cleaning. Perhaps most importantly, it allowed us to forego the standard 36 inch wide sink cabinet for a 30 inch wide sink cabinet and bought us 6 or more inches of valuable drawer space.

Our kitchen only has 4 drawers in it so maximizing the space in these drawers is essential! I line the drawers with some inexpensive wrapping paper for a pop of color. We were also able to accommodate our knives in a wooden block at the back of the silverware drawer. The bottom drawer (bottom right) is extra deep and was the perfect solution for our glass storage containers and life factory bottles. These items were previously stored overhead and I frequently had trouble accessing them. Now they are convenient and easy to match tops to containers.

Upstairs in the bedrooms we installed a ceiling fan in the nursery. This is the exact same fan that is installed in our bedroom. (Hampton Bay Bryant sold by Home Depot) What can I say, my husband is in love with this fan. We *may* have an extra one in the garage just in case.

We also had our new window coverings installed by The Shade Store. I am in love! Our HOA has a (dumb) rule that all window coverings visible from the street have to be white. Matt and I really didn’t want to install white 2 in blinds throughout the house. So I found a way around their rule. When you opt for the privacy lining on Roman shades from the Shade Store the lining (what is visible from the street) is white. Woot!

We also re-installed our closet system in the master bedroom- YAY no more living out of suitcases! I adore our closet which is the (now discontinued) IKEA Broder system (sold in the garage storage area rather than the closet area) because of its industrial look and because it was insanely inexpensive. I am bummed that it is discontinued- as was a great and affordable option.

It is so nice to have the house back together again. I even cooked up some meals in the kitchen this week! No more eating out!

*sigh* I am going to go admire our kitchen now… and enjoy a home cooked dinner.

A little late is better than never right? I can’t believe 30 weeks came and went already.

Weight:

I’m currently about 30 lbs up from pre-pregnancy. I know some women try to limit weight gain to 15-25 lbs but my midwives are happy with my weight gain and I am pretty chill about it too.

Energy:

I laugh at my 25 week post where mention getting tired more easily but doing ok. I am exhausted! It doesn’t help that I have been having almost continuous Braxton Hicks contractions (nothing to worry about) which cause my whole uterus to turn rock hard. They are wearing me out!

How is Baby?:

Baby is about 3.5 lbs at the 30 week mark and about 17.5 inches long. He/She has comfortably been resting head down for a whole month now and is currently in the perfect birthing LOA position .

Source

Just like mommy baby seems to like to prepare well in advance for things! Lets hope this positioning is here to say. I have to admit, this baby doesn’t do a lot of big movement in general (or I don’t feel it). Mostly small movement like kicks and punches. As my belly grows and the placenta covers less area I am starting to feel stronger movement. Thankfully baby allows me to sleep as the kicks and punches aren’t keeping me up at night.

How is Mommy?:

I am doing well. I was so relieved to pass my 3 hour glucose test. I failed the first one, which is pretty common. I have to say though, the second test was something I never want to do again. Fasting for 12 hours, baseline blood draw, 100 mg of dextrose (aka sugar water), and blood draws every hour for 3 hours. I was shaky and nauseated for the whole test. By the time I could finally eat (after 16 hrs of fasting) I snarfed my food down and felt worse. I spent the rest of the day curled up in bed with a pillow. Thank goodness I passed after that ordeal.

All good things have to come to an end. Matt was enjoying the very agreeable wife during the first and second trimester. Weeks 28 and 29 he found himself with a slightly cranky, terse, and quick to get irritated wife. I blame the sudden exhaustion setting in and my communication style which becomes uber direct when under stress. He’s reported that I’ve returned to my normal self for the most part but that he expects this side of me to return during labor as the first thing that usually goes for me in stress situations is the ability to formulate coherent sentences to communicated my wishes in a pleasant manner. Oy.

Classes:

We started our 7 week natural childbirth class a couple weeks ago. We have a small class, with only 4 other couples, and all of the couples are planning birth center or natural hospital births. Two of the other couples are using the same midwives and birth center that we are. In the next few weeks we will also be taking “a day about baby”, “infant and child CPR”, “breastfeeding basics”, and “The happiest baby on the block (based on the book)”.

Home Preparations:

All that is left to do is finishing moving things back into the bedrooms and kitchen! The nursery is 80% there- just a few boxes to unpack. In the master bedroom we have to re-install our closet system and hang our clothes back up- Woot!. The kitchen… well everything needs to be moved back in. We had the whole house deep cleaned last week and it no longer feels like a construction zone!

I know that I am going to blink and it will be 35 weeks already. Everyone told me that after 20 weeks things would fly by but I didn’t believe them. Holy moly everything is moving so quickly!

Ahhh! A whole month has gone by since my last post. I could blame pregnancy but really it has been phase 2 of our renovation. We are really close to being done, just waiting on one set of window coverings to ship before we schedule installation of our window coverings. In the meantime our bedroom window is covered in white butcher paper and we are partially moved back into our bedroom. Thanks to Instagram I have some photos of our progress. You know it is bad when you can’t even be bothered to pull out a regular camera and rely on cell phone photos.

Paint
It took our painter 4 and a half days to paint the ceilings, walls and closets in our Master bedroom and the Office/Nursery. Most of that time was taping off and carefully painting stripes on 2 of the nursery walls.

We used the same color in both bedrooms- Vintage Grey by Valspar.

We used BEHR’s Bleached Linen (which is used throughout the house) for the ceiling in both rooms, the Master closet, and the stripes in the nursery.

We also used Valspar Sea Breeze in the Nursery/Office Closet.

While these colors were picked out at big box stores, we took the color sample to Kelly Moore Paint and had them color match it in their Enviro Coat zero VOC paint.

Carpet

I am so in love with the carpet! We purchased Mohawk Carpet Ensemble Berber in Cool Cadence from Flynn’s Carpet Cents. We absolutely loved our customer service from Flynn’s and would recommend them to anyone in the Puget Sound area. The bullnose on the stairs was extra but it really gives them a finished look. In the photo on the right you get a peek at our Turquoise closet and the elfa back of door wrapping paper station.

3M Window film

Half of our house faces southwest and in the summer those rooms (Nursery/office and dining room) can become extremely warm. In addition to the roman shades that we have ordered we also decided to combat the heat with 3M Prestige Series PR50 window film. It is impossible to even tell that there is a film on the windows and we can’t wait for the heat reduction this summer.

Honey Do List

We had a long honey do list that I knew Matt didn’t have time to complete and that I couldn’t do because of pregnancy (anything involving a ladder for example). So we contracted this out.

Install new 3.25 inch baseboard in upstairs

Anchor nursery furniture to the wall (lockers, changing cart, etc)

Install shelving in Nursery and Master bedroom

Replace all the smoke detectors in the house

Install ceiling fan in Nursery

Replace can lights in kitchen

Install new box for light above fireplace

Unfortunately this is where my project management skills fell apart- I didn’t get the contractor out soon enough to do an estimate to get us on the schedule for the timing I wanted (right after the carpet was installed) so we ended up having about a week wait. In the end none of the lighting things on the list got done. I’m pretty pissed off about the ceiling fan in particular. I told the gentleman doing the estimate that all the light boxes in the ceiling were a non standard size and they needed to be replaced. I also told him that I knew the boxes weren’t secured enough to hang a ceiling fan from and that we needed to install a conversion kit. He ignored the information I was giving him and didn’t schedule enough time to do these items. When he started to work on the fan and indeed discovered that I was right he said we would have to schedule the work for another day because he hadn’t allowed enough time. Color me frustrated. As of right now we haven’t rescheduled that yet and I think Matt is contemplating working with a different contractor (I should note that this is NOT the contractor we worked with on the kitchen).

Nonetheless, with the baseboard installed we could finally move things into the office/nursery and into our bedroom.

Lockers

As I mentioned in the last post we had the lockers refinished at Maaco using automotive paint. I think the Maaco folks thought I was crazy but they look AMAZING! If you are going to go this route allow for plenty of time for the lockers to off-gas before putting them in their final resting place. I should note that it is really hard to photograph these lockers because it is automotive paint. In different lighting it can look vastly different. It is a blueish green color and we are absolutely in love.

I borrowed a rivet gun and attached locker numbers which also happen to be our anniversary date. Love the small touches.

I also installed hanging clothes rods to the inside of the lockers. I used 5/8 inch dowels cut to size with these adhesive curtain rod brackets that I found on Amazon- worked like a charm and only took a matter of minutes to complete. Eventually I will paint the dowels grey but the natural wood works well for now. On the left you can see the Ikea Shelf we installed above the changing station. This shelf used to be in our kitchen above the sink- now it holds blankets and this beautiful bee mobile crocheted for me by my friend Annie.

So this is where we stand. The nursery side of the room is starting to come together. We still have to move the desk to the office side and complete re-installing our Elfa closet system in the Nursery/Office (and unpack all the boxed up office stuff). In the master we need to re-install the Ikea Closet and unpack all the boxed up closet/bedroom stuff. We still need to have the new window coverings (2 inch wood blinds in the kitchen and Roman shades everywhere else) installed and have the contractor complete all the lighting projects. We have cleaners coming to do a deep clean on Friday and after that we will *slowly* start to move stuff back into the kitchen- finally. I am pretty confident we can have all of this completed by the end of the month.

It goes without saying- it has been a very busy month.

It is official. We are crazy.

Our kitchen is finally done, and we are not only still living without a working kitchen but now we are also living without bedrooms… or carpet… in approximately 500 sq feet. In addition to the kitchen renovation we knew that we needed to replace all the carpet in the house. The carpet was 15 years old and cheap, cheap, cheap. We also discovered that the builder had left a 3/4 inch gap in the subfloor in the upstairs hallway. I discovered the gap when my high heel sunk down a good inch or so when I stepped on that spot. Awesome. So that needed to be repaired too. We also wanted to paint the bedrooms, replace all the window coverings, change out the baseboard, and install a new ceiling fan in the office. So, instead of moving back into our newly renovated kitchen we decided it would be easier to move out of the bedrooms and move everything back in when it was all completed (estimated about 2 weeks time).

Just a quick little video tour of our space.

Moving out was a pain in the butt. We underestimated the amount of time it would take and ended up working until Midnight (on a week night) to finish it up in time for the carpet guys to tear out the carpet the next day. We wouldn’t have been able to do it without the help of our dear friend Jay- who likely never wants to carry something up or down our stairs again.

Finished Kitchen! (with an office in it- lol).

But when I think about the nice new carpet, nice window coverings and the pretty paint for the walls I get excited.

Beautiful grey berber carpet! The fabric swatches are for the roman shades going in the master bedroom (right) and nursery/office (left)

Office/nursery colors! We picked the Vintage Grey (top right) and Sea Breeze (Bottom Right) for both rooms. The nursery will also have lots of red accents.

Our lockers are finally getting refurnished and painted! The green/blue sparkly paint is actually automotive paint from Maaco. I cannot wait to get these back and outfit them with hanging rods for baby clothes!

We also figured out our baby changing station. This restaurant utility cart will be strapped to the wall (for safety) and the bins will house our cloth diaper supplies and baby odds and ends (socks, onesies, etc).

Paint is going on the walls (and ceiling) as I type and I am hoping to schedule carpet installation for next Wednesday. Windows coverings should be arriving in a couple of weeks.

Needless to say my nesting instincts are in full force!
